Instead of the usual listicle to kick things off, here’s an interesting map from the Washington Post — the relative proportion of bars vs. grocery stores across the US.

Gassy, Visible in the Night Sky, and Yet to Be Probed by Man

Bell’s Brewery is about to debut a series of beers based on Gustov Holst’s orchestral suite “The Planets”. Get ready for the Uranus jokes.

Beer News (May25–June 1)

BWJlogoI’ll start with some sad news. The founder of Rogue Ales, Jack Joyce, has died. Joyce started out as an executive for Nike shoes before founding the now iconic Oregon brewing company back 1988.

Beer News (May 19–25)

OK, let’s start with a “listicle” (an article that’s basically just a list) that tells us what we want to hear — the health benefits of beer. And here’s a listicle I missed (a missticle?) from April, somebody’s list of the best cities for beer. And dude, I totally agree with you. [Your town] should have made the list. I mean, what were they thinking?

Beer News (May 11-18)

Scary news this week from California — Stone Brewing had to evacuate their brewery in the face of a wildfire. So far, the brewery and its residents are okay, but the wildfires in the region continue. In other California brewery news, Sierra Nevada is opening a nano brewery, a 20-gallon (~80-L) pilot system for experimentation.

The Brewers Association has released a new set of guidelines for craft beer.

Beer News (May 4–11)

BWJlogoAlright, let’s start with a couple “listicles” (articles that are really just a list). The website Hiconsumption gave what it felt were the 15 best canned beers. Yahoo Travel listed 5 cities in which to find a perfect pint. And finally, Buzzfeed presented a list of breweries “that you should know about.

Beer News (April 29–May 4)

BWJlogoSo, the Kentucky Derby was run this week. But for beer drinkers, perhaps the important most important race was this one — the setting of the new beer mile world record.

For years, craft brewing has shown strong growth. However, it’s not the fastest growing alcoholic beverage, this year, cider is. (And the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Minnesota is getting an influx of new cider brands.) And, some breweries are branching out into more expensive, “luxury” offerings.

Beer News (April 14–20)

BWJlogoOnce again, we’ll start with a listicle ‚ 23 things homebrewers are tired of hearing, from Buzzfeed. And here are the NHC first round winners. (I was lucky enough to judge some of these beers at the Austin regionals.) And speaking of beer contests, here’s a behind the scenes look at judging for the World Beer Cup.

Beer News (March 10-March 16)

BWJlogoOK, I usually start the beer news roundup with a listicle, and — as you might expect — this week there were plenty of them. Every media outlet in the world seemingly wanted to publish a St. Patrick’s Day beer list. I decided to skip them, because you can just search for “St. Patrick’s Day” and check the endless news results. Also, I suspect that homebrewers more than anyone know what beers they’d like to drink on this holiday.

Beer News (Feb. 24–Mar. 1)

BWJlogoEvery week, someone makes a list of beers they claim you gotta try. This week, it’s the website Cool Material and they give their “bucket list” of 25 beers to try before you kick the bucket. The list is an odd mix of some of the more popular and trendy beers, with some head-scratchers thrown in. In a related note, Deadspin lists 24 beers that might have you reaching for a bucket.

One cool thing about beer is, just about any beer you can find, you probably afford. Or at least that was true before beer started to be viewed as a commodity by some collectors. In an article for Draft magazine, their beer editor presents some crazy beer prices for (what he calls) black market beers.

Last week, I kicked off the news roundup with a reminder that brewing can be hazardous. Here’s a good article that outlines the various dangers of brewing, from Chicago’s Solemn Oath brewery. This mostly applies to brewing on a commercial scale, but some of it translates to homebrewers. And, what compilation of beer news is complete without some sort of listicle? Here’s the 5 beers you must try for New York City’s Beer Week, according to Gothamist. Also, here’s a list of spring seasonal beers being released in the United States.
