OK, it’s been awhile since I’ve compiled an installment of Beer News. Of course, you’ve all heard the Big News[tm] — Anheuser-Busch Inbev’s acquisition of SABMiller. I’ve got a whole bunch of articles collected and will post a separate update about that development, including various people speculating on how this will affect craft breweries. OK, it’s been awhile, so this is a fairly large installment of Beer News. As always, let’s start with a listicle. In a list concept that seemed totally forced, but that I couldn’t stop myself from clicking on, Thrillist has compiled the perfect beer for every NFL team. Somehow, the best beer for the Browns isn’t a brown ale. Uproxx has also compiled the best breweries in South Dakota. I’m from there — although currently living in Texas — and I hadn’t heard of some of these.
The recipe for tripel is downright simple. And, wort production is not that elaborate (at least compared to, say, a multiple decoction mash). Fermentation, however, can get a bit tricky. [Read more…]
Alright, as always, let’s kick this off with a “listicle” (an article in the form of a list) or two. HuffPo lists the 10 Best Brewery Tours, in their estimation, and The Street gives 10 Cities Where Craft Beer is Taking Off.
OK, I haven’t posted an installment of Beer News in awhile, although I did comment on two big beer stories — a brewers yeast strain capable of producing morphine and IPA giving you man boobs — individually. So let’s start, as we frequently start, with a listicle — the best craft brewery in every state, according to Thrillist.
Yesterday, I posted a brief description of how, very soon, there will be a yeast strain capable of producing morphine from glucose. The usual substrates for morphine production, compounds isolated from opium poppies, will not be required. The simplicity of how morphine could potentially be produced has already caused nearly every article in the popular press (and many in the scientific press) to claim that producing morphine could be as easy as brewing beer at home. Beer and Wine Journal. We’re not foolin’ — at least about beer.
It was April Fools Day on Wednesday. Every year, many breweries post press releases on April Fools Day announcing a spoof beer or some other prank. This year, I’ve collected some the best here. But first, there were some beer stories on the web that were not April Fools jokes. For example, someone felt it necessary to point out that these five beers are real. Also, apparently someone decided to make a dress out of beer and bacteria and announce it around April 1st.
Yesterday was April Fools Day, so of course there were many spoof announcements made by brewery websites. I’ll collect the best 10 or so of those and post them tomorrow. For today, here’s the rest of recent beer news. We’ll start with a listicle by Zagat — the 15 hottest new beer bars.
OK, let’s start with a listicle (an article in the form of a list). Craftbeer.com gives what they feel are the top 5 beer releases of 2015. How they arrived at these 5 beers isn’t explained.
There were a lot of articles about beer and food this week, including an article on beef and beer in Belgium, pairing beer and bar snacks, pairing beer and chocolate, and finally, pairing beer and Girl Scout cookies. And in the same vein, the Cleveland Plain Dealer website gives seven things to know about attending a beer dinner.
